Hunch
His name was Julian Grant Smith, but to everyone who loved him, he was simply Hunch. He had this gift, he could walk into any room and make people feel lighter. He knew how to find joy in the ordinary moments and had this incredible ability to make everyone around him laugh until their cheeks hurt and gave the kind of hugs that made everything feel okay, even when it wasn’t.
Losing him was the hardest thing many of us had ever faced the kind of pain that makes you question everything you thought you knew, right down to how you keep going when someone so important is suddenly gone.
But here’s what saved us: each other.
In our darkest moments, we became a team. We shared the weight of grief, so no one had to carry it alone. We supported each other through the impossible days and found strength we didn’t know existed when we faced life’s challenges side by side.
The Hunchman Trust exists because of that experience-both the devastating loss and the healing power of community. We built this for everyone who doesn’t have that team around them, because we know firsthand that no one should have to navigate grief alone.
Every challenge we complete, every life we touch, every young person who discovers they’re not alone-it’s all in honour of our dad, Hunch, whose belief in the power of showing up for each other lives on in everything we do. And we’re only just getting started.
